Dance examinations in India ? Why do we have them?
The answer is very simple. We take dance very seriously just like how mathematics or physics are taken in all its seriousness. Examinations in dance are viewed as a highly challenging and rewarding experience, which will help the children to test their artistic abilities and strengthen their training. The examination is a stepping stone for students to improve on their artistry and technique, show their competence in the art form and prepare those who wish to pursue a career in dance.
The Foundation is proud to present 112 students for its first Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD ) dance examinations in Imperial Classical Ballet. The examinations will be held from November 11-14, 2016 at our studio ‘Centre of Dance’ in Bangalore. We are excited to welcome Ms.Vivienne Saxton, Chairman of the Imperial Ballet faculty (ISTD) as the external examiner to assess our students. The candidates will receive internationally recognised certificate from ISTD on successful completion of the examination.
Preparing for the dance examinations
We all know that good preparation is essential to do well in any examination. Parents should remember that extra classes are offered to the student to help them prepare as per the examination standards. Days leading to the examination, make sure your child is well aware of the syllabus as well as the non dance details such as how to enter the dance hall, greet the examiner etc. Teachers cover these aspects in these extra classes.
Pre- examination day
The day before a ballet exam should be filled with excitement; after all, you, as a dancer, is going to perform on stage. Ensure all essentials are packed and ready including your dance wear, shoes, warm up clothes and hair accessories. Prefer a light meal over a heavy dinner, and remember, a good sleep is essential for a great performance, the next day.
Are you feeling a little nervous ? It is absolutely normal and there is nothing to worry about.
Start your day with a light meal and double check that your bag is ready with all essentials.
Here comes the most important part- reach the dance studio well ahead of your examination time. All students must arrive one hour prior to their scheduled exam time. This is the time when your teachers will prepare you for the exams, making sure your hair and attire are up to the mark. It is also the time for your warm up routine which is extremely important to fully prepare for the examination. Looking perfect and beautifully groomed will prove to be a confidence booster when you are ready to take the dance examinations.
As you await your turn, recollect all the corrections that your teacher gave you, the extra classes you took and all the hard work you have put in. Relax, take a deep breath and affirm yourself that you are ready for this challenge.
Did you hear your name being called ?
You know it is time – to walk in confidently, dance your heart out and give your best .
Special note to parents : Your child has worked so hard and they deserve a small treat after the examination. Let this be the time to let your child know how proud you are of his/her commitment and dedication to learning ballet.
We also take this opportunity to let all the parents know that you deserve a pat on the back too for taking that extra mile for your child. All the best to all the students and teachers who have put in great effort and always remember this…
