The Royal Ballet Company was founded in 1931 by Ninette de Valois, and is one of the leading companies in the world both in tradition and innovation. The company performs classics like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and the Nutcracker as well as contemporary pieces such as Chroma by resident choreographer Wayne McGregor. The current director of the company is Kevin O’Hare – a graduate of the Royal Ballet School and former dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet

The Bolshoi Ballet, founded in 1776, is one of the world’s oldest ballet companies. It is also one of the largest, with around 220 dancers. Because of the size of the company, the Bolshoi operates two troupes of corps de ballet. The company began to develop its own bold, colourful identity with the appointment of Alexander Gorsky as director in 1900, and it is in stark contrast with rival company Mariinsky, whose style is at time  regarded as more pure and refined.
