The winter holidays are upon us, and it is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy some well-deserved quiet time. While you put your feet up and have a nice cup of hot chocolate, why not dive into the world of dance? Here are some beautiful pieces that you can watch at home with family and friends – enjoy!

First up, one of Ms Elina’s favourite moments in ballet: Marianela Nunez and Vadim Muntagirov of the Royal Ballet in the Sugar Plum Fairy Pas de Deux Adagio. It is pure beauty. The costumes and scenery are spectacular, but the music,  artistic interpretation and technical excellence by the dancers is enough to blow anyone away. Ms Elina has watched this over and over again  – will it be your new favourite, too?

Next we have a wonderful concept by the English National Ballet – ballet on demand. It’s like the Netflix of dance – only somewhat fewer titles to choose from. You rent the ballet, usually for 14 days, and the quality of the stream is excellent. For this festive season, Dyumna recommends watching the classic, La Sylphide, originally choreographed in 1832 – almost 200 years ago!

Ms Sushmitha loves the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and it is a story that most of of us who are beyond middle school are at least somewhat familiar with. Very few, however, have seen Shakespeare’s story come alive through dance. We have found a full version of the ballet for you to enjoy, featuring audience favourites Misty Copeland and Roberto Bolle. Take a look.

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without another mention of the Nutcracker, and here we hop across the Atlantic to America to watch George Balanchine’s Waltz of the Flowers. An iconic choreographer, iconic piece of music by Tchaikovsky, and an iconic performance by the New York City Ballet. What’s not to love? Sit back and enjoy.

We are hopping off the ballet train for this last recommendation, but don’t worry, dance enthusiasts will feel their feet tapping to this Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Radio City Rockettes of New York City – a festive performance of dance, song and entertainment filled with reindeer, Santas and Christmas trees.

Have a wonderful holiday filled with festive cheer, enjoy some ballet, and get ready for a New Year of dance!
